Lea County Electric Cooperative Selects McLean for Substation Design

Lea County Electric Cooperative, Inc., based in Lovington, N.M., recently selected McLean Engineering Company for a substation design project that involves two new substations (South Lovington and Steward) and one addition to an existing substation (Stakeholder).

The South Lovington substation project will be a new 69:12.47 kV substation. It will replace LCEC’s existing South Lovington substation near Lovington in Lea County. The new station will consist of four 69 kV circuit breakers. Two of these breakers will protect power transformers located in the South Lovington substation and two will be used for 69 kV transmission line protection. The 12.47 kV portion of the new South Lovington substation will consist of two bus regulated structures capable of feeding up to ten outgoing circuits.

The Steward substation project will be a new 69:12.47 kV substation located near Plains, Texas, in Yoakum County. The new station will be equipped with a 69:12.47 kV power transformer, highside transformer protection via a 69 kV circuit breaker and a bus regulated 12.47 kV low side structure capable of feeding four outgoing circuits.

The Stakeholder substation addition project includes adding a new 69:4.16 kV substation to an existing customer substation located near Plains, Texas, in Yoakum County. The new portion of this station will consist of a 69:4.16 kV transformer equipped with a load tap changer, highside transformer protection via a 69 kV circuit breaker and a 4.16 kV low side structure capable of feeding two outgoing circuits as well as tying to the existing 4.16 kV low side bus.

McLean Engineering will be responsible for the development of all plans, specifications, contracts, and protection schemes as well as providing field assistance during energization of the station.
